February is Dental Health Month! Here at Brodhead Vet, we take dental health very seriously. The health of your dog or cat's mouth effects their quality of life, comfort and health. Tartar builds up on the teeth and eventually gets under the gum line, causing abscesses, bleeding gums, pockets of infection, and root exposure. These issues all cause pain and discomfort to the animal.
A dental cleaning starts with radiographs of your pet's mouth. Just like when you go to the dentist, we use professional equipment to do all dental procedures. X-rays give us a look under the gum line. There may be broken roots, bone loss, or infection that we can't see just by glancing at a tooth. After x-rays are done, all teeth are scaled free of tartar with an ultrasonic scaler. All necessary extractions are done and sutures are placed if needed. Finally, all teeth are polished and rinsed.
For all dental procedures, the animal is sedated and under general anesthesia. Please look at the pictures and video below to get an idea of how a typical dental procedure is done here at our clinic.
If you would like to schedule a dental cleaning for you pet, call the clinic before February 28th and receive $15 off the cleaning! All dentals must be done before May 1st to receive this discount.
