Horse Deworming
HORSE OWNERS...time to think about your fall deworming after last nights hard frost. First remove the bot eggs from your horses hair, then watch for a week to see if new bot eggs appear. If you do not notice any new bot eggs you are ready for deworming. We recommend a combination product this time of year (ivermectin or moxidectin + praziquantel). We recommend a name brand product as we sometimes wonder if the generics are working properly. Quest Plus or Zimectrin Gold are two names that come to mind. These combination products will kill all species that infect horses (provided resistance is not an issue). If you are wondering about resistance, wait 2-3 weeks after deworming and then bring a fresh individual fecal sample for each horse to the clinic. The sample should be collected fresh and then refrigerated until brought to the clinic. We will analyze the sample and call you with the results. Most horses should not need to be dewormed again until May/June at the earliest if they are adults animals and resistance is not occuring at your farm. Every farm is different based on the number of animals per acre, but a majority of horses are getting dewormed to often increasing the risk of developing resistance to our dewormers.

Maribelle Lewis, a member of the BVMC family, recently passed away. She served us 35+ years doing a wonderful job. I remember her laugh. You could often hear her laughing and visiting with someone on the phone or in the office. She enjoyed her work. I think that might be difficult for some to imagine these days. She recognized the value she contributed to the practice. She was vital to keeping things running smoothly. She was a wise person. She was a practice manager before there was an official title or a lot of formal training and seminars. She multi-tasked before there was multi-tasking….she juggled answering the phone, waiting on clients, and dispatching the doctors by 2-way radio. She had a good business sense, what made a business grow, and the practice experienced steady growth. She taught me that all clients were important. She knew the farm clients, where they lived, which doctor was in their area and how long a procedure or a call was supposed to take. She was caring and compassionate with the pet owners and had a remarkable memory for details and personalities. She trained a lot of high school students about office management/bookkeeping and Dr. Heise was one of those students. She nurtured veterinary students and veterinarians who came to the practice from Minnesota, Florida, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, as well as Wisconsin. She worked under adverse conditions…from wearing boots to keep warm in a temporary office, to tolerating the smells of veterinary practice. The veterinary practice was her family and she made the practice feel like family. She loved her dachshunds. Heidi and Fritz. Generally she restrained her own dogs when they needed shots or treatment. It was safer that way! She loved to garden. She loved to fish. She loved to visit. Our prayers are with her family and friends during this time of loss and despair. We thank you Maribelle for your years of devotion, you will be sorely missed!

Reminders via email!
Check out Pet Portals! Our new service with Pet Portals is working well. This allows us to email vaccination reminders to you! Additionally with an email address on file we can send you blood results, Coggin's forms, lab reports, and in the future digital radiographs. For some of our doctors and staff this is an effective way of communicating about your pet. We will not be sharing your email with anyone else (we hate spam just as much as you!). If you are interested in this service, please call BVMC and our staff will be happy to put your email address in your digital file.
